To summarize a few points about this module:

You do not need a password to use Google Notes, and the email field does not have to be an email address--it's just a convenient way of uniquely identifying your stored notes.

The keyword field is primarily to separate your notes, because you can have multiple, differing note areas on your Google Homepage.

Because your notes are not password-protected, security through obscurity is the best protection available at this time (i.e. pick a really funky keyword that people won't guess).  However, by sharing the "email" and "keyword" fields with others, you can have a shared notepad, although I admit it is not optimized for this purpose.
Finally, there are medium and large notepad areas available as well:

infinityis.rahga.com/smallnotes.xml
infinityis.rahga.com/mediumnotes.xml
infinityis.rahga.com/largenotes.xml

A privacy policy is available at infinityis.rahga.com Basically, it just says that I won't sell/harvest/share/etc. your information or email address to those who shouldn't have it.  The only situations where it might be provided to a third party is under a court order or if the module became popular enough that Google wants to guarantee exceptional reliability by storing the data on its own servers (which would be way cool).

Enjoy!

I've added the capability to select your own timezone for the timestamp displayed below the note.  You can also turn off the display of the timestamp completely.

Very nice... thanks!
I wonder how difficult it would be to add a print option?
– Shawn 33 months ago
From a technical perspective, it probably wouldn't be too difficult to add a print option.  However, I don't know where I would conveniently put a "print" option. The module inherently has dynamic content, meant (primarily) for short-term storage. I would guess that so few people would actually print their lists that adding space forr a print button would not be justified, at least in the main modules.

If there is enough demand for a printable notepad, I would consider making a module that offers a print option.  However, I'm not yet convinved that the feature would be used enough to warrant such a modification.
– David Hoelscher 32 months ago
This is very cool. I'd love the print option. Teeny button. Thanks!

The facility is really need. I resolve to send gmial to myself for this purpose. I work but could be better with google notes.
– Kyaw Tun 32 months ago
I've added a print button to the module.  I was able to fit it so that it didn't take up any new space, and if you choose the "hide timestamp" option, it isn't even visible. It actually works pretty well...so yeah, thanks for the suggestion, it fits right in.

when does this module actually save its data? there is no save button but saving seems to work ... at least sometimes. when you close the window to fast your notes are lost... does the notepad send the changes at regular intervals to the server? it would be nice to have a save button that sends when you want, it would make it more reliable - when you note something on the road you want to make shure its really saved, don“t you?
– zonke 30 months ago
The save interval is every 1 second.  I assumed that would be often enough for most purposes. Adding a save button would clutter the interface and confuse the issue--it would tempt people to click "save" even when it's not necessary.  That was the reason I included the "last saved" text, so you still get confirmation of the save.  Effectively, unless you do a really fast copy-paste-closewindow, you should lose (at most) only a few characters.

Hello,
I tried to install it from work but, for an obscure reason, it seems that websense filter it due to its categorization in the game section...

Same here. Websense at NG.
– Another websense victim 29 months ago
Hmm....I don't know how/why it's categorized in any sort of a game section. Have you tried adding it directly through the developer module?

I haven't seen it in the game section anywhere...any idea where this game section is?

Just a nit picky thought, .just to be persistent.

your remarks says "persistently stored" do you not mean "Consistently stored".

– Norman Kabak 28 months ago
Consistently might work too, but I think persistently fits better.  "Persistently" indicates that even when you go away, the data "persists" (i.e. remains).  "Consistently" would refer to the technique of storing the data, which is every second.  However, I see how the words could be interchanged without losing meaning.

Maybe I should have said "persistently, consistently stored".   :)

This module seems to have stopped working.  It says that it is parked at Godaddy, and all the information I typed in the notes has disappeared.  Does anyone know what happened?
– Gary 27 months ago
I can confirm this problem... everything is gone :-(
– Moseisley 27 months ago
where has it gone? please get it back!
– crap 27 months ago
Ok, it's back.  I think it would be wise at this point to have a discussion about how reliable this module is.  Who ensures that it stays up?  What are the odds that it will disappear again?  What happened and how can that be prevented in the future?
– Gary 27 months ago
Does anyone know what it went out?
– Gary 27 months ago
The module is mostly relaible.  In over six months of the existence of the notepad, this the first major problem where notes were not available. The problem was that the registration on the website expired for a few hours, but it took awhile for the new registration to be updated across all the root servers. The problem should not occur in the future, but in any event, your notes will still exist and upon request I can retrieve them for you manually if they are inaccessible for any reason.

Sorry for any inconvenience that may have been caused.

Any way you guys could get a more reliable server to host these notes?

You can see the frequency of the problem is getting worse

This module is still down.  Are my notes lost forever?  Does anyone have a fix for this?
– Craig 24 months ago
No worries, the notes are not lost forever. The hosting company is experiencing some downtime for server work. It's unfortunate, even for me (yes, even the author relies on Google Notes too). It should be back up soon...  Sorry for the interruption(s) in service
– David Hoelscher 24 months ago
google notes is back!
I first noticed it working again 7:02 PM 11/25/2006.
So it looks like we were down for 5 days  11/20 to 11/25

10:08 AM 11/27/2006 - I just noticed the google notes is giving this message
.
Service Temporarily Unavailable
The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.

Additionally, a 503 Service Temporarily Unavailable error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

OK...just noticed this module is working again.  How about getting a more reliable server to host this?
– Leon 24 months ago
It's less about server reliability, and more about the use of bleeding edge tech with a very large userbase. The core of google notes is really quite simple: Ruby on Rails, MySQL database, and a few lines of code. To get any decent performance out of this system, we use tech that keeps the app running in between requests, rather than the old way of starting a new script or parsing php for every single request, and that's where the problems come up. When the old server finally gave up the ghost, I replaced it with a new server... Everything (several dozen clients) but Google Notes was back up in less than a day. However, I decided not to use mod-fastcgi this time around. It's not very reliable in Apache 2, as I would have to clear out old orphaned processes at least once a week. Using mod-fcgid worked great for most of our Rails websites, but it spawns new processes and weights it's priorities by request... The 3 requests per minute for an average site couldn't hold a candle to the demand of 100 requests per minute or so of Google Notes, and paying customers wouldn't get the attention they deserved.

Ultimately, after a lot of tweaking, I've started running Google Notes over mod_scgi, and it seems to be doing fine... Sorry about the downtime, everyone. :)
– Richard Hoelscher 24 months ago
By the way, the problem where it would stop working for a few hours a day were due to the fact that the webserver was dying... After so many I/O errors (common because this module does a lot of reading/writing), write access would shut down until a reboot.

Google notes is down. When will it be back up?
– Ed 9 months ago
Back up, Great!
– Ed 9 months ago
It was down and I wasn't notified because David thought I was still moving it. We should be good now up until the point we have roughly 50 times the use we do now.

Server capacity was a problem because a heavy load would prompt our dying server hardware to crash unexpectedly. There's only several thousand regular users out of nearly 100k registered, but that's to be expected in any google app.
